How do I choose the correct makeup technique for my face?

I’ve tried dozens of tutorials on youtube, but I swear the tips and tricks only work on certain people! Everything I’ve tried looks really fake or clown-like. Is there a way to know what type of makeup techniques will work for my features? Or is it just a matter of trial and error?
