Split End Damage
What causes split ends? I always seem to have more split ends in the hair at the nape of my neck rather than the outermost layer, which is odd because I feel like the outermost layer should have more split ends since it is what is taking the most damage.

Two things usually done to hair cause the most damage: Heat and barrettes and such.
Any heat causes damage- blow dryers, curling irons, straighteners- they all cause damage. Try to get used to not using them if you can.
Barrettes, bobby pins, "claws", hair ties, even those elastic-ky coated ones, still cause breakage- and given your description of where the most breakage is for you, it sounds like a hair tie or other hair tamer.
If it is heat- simply give it up. Your hair will dry on its own in about 20 minutes- maybe up to an hour if it is really long, thick and a humid climate. But just stop using heat. If it is hair tamers and decor, well, you will likely need to find better quality or a new way to keep your locks in check; perhaps instead of a pony tail, you can try a wide fabric hair band. Even a loose braid might work better than a tight elastic tie right at your scalp- too much stress on the individual strands.
I am in my sixties, with loooong hair, and while I have a few split ends, mostly when I go and get a trim, the stylist tells me I have such healthy hair! Well, that's because I don't use much shampoo- and often none, at all- only a little conditioner well-rinsed out with cool water, let my hair dry naturally, and I stopped strangling all the strands with tightly twisted hair ties. When I put it all up on my head, I use a large claw-type tamer, and don't allow it to be too tight. My hair is nicely shiny and healthy.
You could do worse than to give it all a try.
