Where do city deer go during the day?

Every so often, deer come in to town in the evenings to visit backyards and birdfeeders. In the day, however, there is no trace of them. There aren't any forests close by, and I've always wondered where they live in the daytime.

  1. I live inside the DC Beltway, and see deer in the greenways and small parks when I am running at dawn or twilight pretty regularly.  I asked a buddy of mine about this who worked for the Forest Service a few years back, and he said they just hunker down in the tall grass / trees during the day.  As prey animals they are accustomed to blending in and staying still.  If you're out on a trail and can see grass thats more than waist high, there's a decent chance there are wild critters hunkered down there, even in really urban areas.
