How might you stop yourself from thinking too much during a guided visualization?

I love the times I'm led down a staircase hidden in a tree deep into the earth where something is revealed to me. Yet I struggle to not pop something I think of into the image rather than allowing an image to naturally come. How do you control that when you are supposed to be in a meditative/open/receptive state (but your brain doesn't stop imposing it's own will on your experience)?

I am no expert, but I have practiced meditation some, including guided visualizations. Basically, you just acknowledge the thought and then gently bring your mind back, without judgement. Everybody thinks things like that during meditation, but more advanced meditators are able to do the above.

Two resources about mindfulness meditation that I recommend are the (Google) curriculum, Search Inside Yourself, by Jade Meng Tan, and Dan Harris's Ten Percent Happier (book and podcast).
