How can I finally win at Yahtzee?

Yahtzee relies heavily on luck, but of course the game does require some skill. I have a pretty good understanding of which dice to roll and which to keep, but what kind of strategies can create the highest scores? Help me win at family game night tonight!

Any games beyond the simplest children’s ones (such as Chutes and Ladders) provide the opportunity to employ one or more strategies to increase your odds of winning despite the presence of chance.

    • Balance your scoring between the upper and lower sections. This will help to maximize your score.
    • Early in the game attempt the 35 points bonus. Try to fill in the upper section with sixty three or more points.
    • Hold off on using your chance roll until late in the game as your scoring options grow very limited.
    • Delay going for straights early in the game. Try for a large straight when you roll a small straight.
    • If you roll a bad combination that results in a low score, fill in a zero in either the aces or the Yahtzee box.
    • Avoid using ones or twos to score a three or four, since they don’t offer many points. Save them for a full house or the ones and twos boxes.
    • Statistically, people score a Yahtzee about once every twenty two rolls. Take a shot early and at every reasonable chance that you get. Gaining a second one will net you one hundred bonus points.
