Broadcast and streaming network producers are now requiring “corona-proof” programming to avoid productions that will shut down unfinished in the inevitable second wave. They have shown the most interest in “unscripted” (reality TV) shows which are cheaper to produce with low to mid six figures spent per episode as opposed to several million per episode.

“Unscripted” shows require shooting to be done over a relatively short time with a longer time spent in post-production doing editing. Over half of the budget and time are spent up front.

New show pitches have to present a COVID-19 plan to prove that they are ready for minimal disruption during shooting to be considered much less green-lit. Local crews wearing masks and being tested regularly who are prepared to shoot within the homes of the talent and having green screens on hand if needed is one approach.

A fair number are now being shot in “quarantine bubbles” with the cast and crew being quarantined for two weeks, then tested and kept sequestered for the entire shooting schedule. Once it is determined that no reshoots or inserts are required, people will be released except for post-production workers.

Makeup artists who haven’t already taken the Barbicide COVID-19 certification course should do so.

Various shows have begun shooting, while others are about to resume, including:

    Big Brother.

    Hollywood North.

    Love Island.

    The Bachelorette.

    The Bold and the Beautiful.
