What kind of wines tend to be palatable for large groups?
I am getting wine for a gathering and want to know what kinds would suit a group setting best.

I will share with you a simple answer and ask a few questions to allow me to give you a very comprehensive answer.
Over arching questions:
Are the people you are serving wine knowledgeable?
Will there be food involved?
Is this a party or a meal (dinner)?
How many people? How much do you want to spend?
How long is this event?
Will other libations (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) be served
Do you need to impress anyone?
For the simple answer;
A mix of red/white/sparkling and 1/2 a bottle per person drinking per 2 hours of party.
If food is involved, try to match the wine with what is being served.
The complicated answer needs to have most of those original questions answered.

Some of the questions still apply;
Is the person hosting wine knowledgeable?
Are you trying to impress anyone?
Will food be served?
Are you bringing a couple of bottles or more than that?
What kind of money do you want to spend?
