Follow this simple 8-step guide for best practices to keep your dark-colored clothes from fading in the wash.
Step 1: Read clothing labels for washing and drying instructions
Step 2: Wash black clothes and dark-colored clothes separately
Step 3: Turn clothes inside out before washing
Step 4: Use cold water and a delicate cycle to wash dark clothes
Step 5: Choose the right laundry detergent to preserve dark colors
Step 6: Avoid using too much detergent
Step 7: Use fabric softener to prevent fading
Step 8: Dry clothes on a low heat setting or air dry

Old Goth here!
And... old stagehand...
Mainly, just old these days, but I digress.
Keeping black clothes black is a challenge. No matter what you do, washing them inevitably grays them, and there's nothing sadder than slipping into a favorite old set of stage blacks and realizing that they... aren't anymore.
Of course you should take care not to abuse them, but the best trick I've found is, once every few months, to bundle all of those great black articles together and run them through a course of black RIT dye. The color will eventually fade no matter what you do, but as long as the clothes are solid black, refreshing them is easy.
