My Grandfather was Cornish, and I grew up eating my mom's pasties (yes "pasties" not "pastries," at least in my house).  The lore is that these were lamb, potato and vegetable pies baked, wrapped in a towel, and placed in a lunch bucket before the men went for a day in the tin mines.   At lunch break, they'd come out into the sunlight, break open the still-steaming hot pies and have a hearty meal before going back underground.

Growing up, they were what we called stick-to-your-ribs food.  Filling, and great for leftovers.  If you've only ever had a chicken pot pie, and think that's basically what a meat pie is, you should definitely check it out!
