How do I sync Google Play Games between Chromebook and Android?

I'm way behind the curve, but I just discovered Stardew Valley and I'm hooked. Because my Android is linked to my Chromebook, I had no trouble accessing the game through Google Play Games on both devices. Unfortunately, there seem to be two separate games -- one on each device. I'd like to play one save on both devices so I can pick up where I left off, not have two separate lives. I found a tutorial to do it on PC or Mac, but Chromebooks operate differently and I'm not seeing a way to link it. Shouldn't it have automatically synced with Google Play Games?
