Are there some good games to give my 8-year-old to get her into board gaming?
I'm not a huge gamer, but my 8-yo has a lot of friends that do play games. I can tell she feels left out. Are there some good games I can get to intro her into that world and get her more excited?

Hi Jennifer,
You can't go wrong with some of the classics like Sorry, Trouble, Connect Four, Battleship, Uno, etc. Slamwich, There's a Lion in the Way (this has been described as D&D for kids and my niece LOVES it!), Takenoko, Cat Crimes (one player), Catan/Ticket To Ride Jr, Outfoxed (co-op), and Mastermind for Kids are other great games your daughter may enjoy!
Cheers!
Matt
Jennifer, there are definitely games that will intro her to the world of board games and get her excited about board games in general. At 8, she is definitely old enough that you can skil games like monopoly, parchisi, sorry, etc - there are lots of newer games that to try!
I think both Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan are great places to start. Try out the base game, before you add in any variations.
Villainois is a slightly more complicated game; it suggests ages 10+ because, I think, of the way you have to keep track of other player's boards. But it might be fun, if you're a big Disney household - or a Marvel one, they have a variant for that. Its made by Ravensburger, and I'm generally a fan of their games - good production values, generally strong gameplay - check out Hocus Pocus (8+) or Wonder Woman (10+) on their site.
Slightly less of a board game, and more of a party game, is codenames. Still, great for the age group and less intense than some of the others above.
There are a lot of games out there, and I've only scratched the surface. My last piece of advice would be to ask your daughter, I bet she knows some games she'd like to have! Good luck!
There are some old school games like Battleship and Sorry that would work.
A more current game would be something like Ticket to Ride.
chess and backgammon poker etc et.al.
