What is a "tree census" in the U.S. Forest service?
I recently overheard people talking about a "tree census" that the U.S. Forest service was conducting and was curious about it. What is a tree census, and what is the purpose of one?

A Tree Census is just what it sounds like: A count and gathering of data regarding the trees in a certain area.
There are City Tree Censuses, and County Tree Censuses, and State Tree Censuses and, the big one: a National Tree Census.
A wealth of data is collected; researchers do not go around simply counting every, single tree, but use plots of speicifc land which were also examined in the last Tree Census, so data can be compared. The National Tree Census is done by the Forest Service; local censuses are done by local entities- often volunteers of nature conservancies.
