Can I make my favorite sweatshirt soft again?

The inside of my most-worn sweatshirt has gone all knobby. It's not soft at all and almost feels like terrycloth. I miss that brand-new fleece softness! Can I get it back? If I must buy a new sweatshirt, how can I keep it soft?
