For an incoming college freshman in fall 2021, the admission process might not be worse, but it will definitely be different.

    • Personal essays will have more weight. Showing the ways in which you've been resilient during the pandemic is crucial to student success. If a student was unable to pass their senior year of high school because of the altered delivery, they'll likely struggle with transitioning to college -- especially when delivery methods are all over the board. Be positive, look to the future, demonstrate your flexibility, and keep your options open. Gone are the days of locking in your 5-year plan with no backup plan, so focusing on adaptability is key.
    • Getting a stellar letter of recommendation will do wonders for your chances. Backing up your claims that you've weathered the storm of 2020 and kept your eye on higher education, a solid letter of recommendation is as good as gold.
    • You may or may not need to take a placement exam. This is because testing in a virtual environment is difficult and hard to maintain testing integrity. In-person testing can be exclusionary to high-risk or students, distance learners, or those with disabilities, though, so there's really no right answer. (My suggestion is to go easy on yourself -- I have seen way too many students get in over their heads thinking college and high school expectations are comparable [spoiler: they're not]).
    • ACT and SAT scores might not matter either. Again, your resiliency during "these difficult times" speaks louder than scores. If you've maintained a good GPA despite all the horrors of the last year, you'll probably do okay.
    • But it all depends on where you apply. Some schools -- especially community colleges or lesser-known universities --  might not have changed much at all.

The bottom line? You just got done overcoming huge changes. Get ready to do it again.
