Should I adopt a cat for my dog?

My dog is a very shy rescue who does not like other dogs. She is very riveted on me, and to a lesser extent, my roommate. She is part Viszla, and this behavior runs in the breed. She seems curious about and interested in cats.  I want to get a cat for her to have a larger pack. I have had cats in the past (and know the commitment it takes to have one) but not since she has been with us. I want the cat for her enrichment and entertainment, but I am afraid she may feel threatened or jealous if she sees me loving and caring for another animal. Is this a bad idea?

  1. I'd say its a risk worth taking.  My experience over a lifetime of cat and dog ownership is that some animals bond, some animals tolerate each other, and some just don't mix.  I have never heard of a good way to tell in advance how that will work out!  Our current cat and dog get along for the most part but don't have the "enrichment and entertainment" behaviors you are looking for (and that we had hoped for!) - my wife is considering a second cat to help with the cat, and the dog gets lots of time at the dog park.

That said, a house with a cat in it is > a cat without.  :)  Good luck, but don't be too disappointed if they don't bond immediately.
