Why does non-clumping cat litter exsist?
My wife accidently bought non-clumping cat litter and it is the worst. Why would anyone want this stuff? All it does it break apart and smell terrible.

Non-clumping litter is sometimes frustrating for humans and soothing for cats. What you smell is the poop smells, as non-clumping litter will not coat the surface of cat poop. Non-clumping clay litter is better at masking the smell of urine, though, as it absorbs more of the urine and neutralizes some of the ammonium. That is why shelters and vet's offices prefer to use non-clumping litter. It's also cheaper and can be scooped more times before needing a total change.
A multi-cat household where cats have been peeing outside the box might benefit from non-clumping litter. Often, cats prefer the smell and texture of the clay litter and are more inclined to pee in the box when they can't smell the urine of the other cats. If your cat is happy using the box with clumping litter, great! it's more convenient for you. But if you have an older cat or a stubborn one who is having a lot of outside-the-box accidents, non-clumping litter might convince them to pee politely.
