How do I bath a dog?

My wife and I just got a new dog. Two days into owning him he got into a bunch of mud. We've both never owned dogs before and don't know how to bathe them. What should we do?

I don't know how big your dog is, but I can tell you how I bathe my ~40 lb dog. We have a standard size bathtub. Fill the tub several inches deep with lukewarm water, then put the dog in. Use a plastic cup or something similar to get the dog's coat wet all over. Lather dog shampoo between your hands and scrub the mud off of the dog. Rinse the soap off again with the plastic cup. Rub the dog's coat to make sure you got all of the soap out. When he/she is clean, lift them out and dry them as best you can with bath towels. The dog will likely try to shake the water off as soon as it gets the chance, so be prepared to get wet.
