Fast Typing

I have an average typing speed of around 80 WPM. Is this something I should include on resumes? If it shouldn’t be included, at what speed should it be considered a skill? Are there jobs I can get with this typing speed? How can I improve it?

  1. That’s not an average typing speed, that’s well above what’s considered average, which is 55 to 65 wpm. You’re way above average and even the professional typist average range. But here’s the thing, you put that on a resume if you are looking for a job requiring strong typing skills. And that’s not every job you may apply for. If you are applying for administrative, marketing/pr/advertising, transcription or social media type work, that would be a benefit when that skill is essential to the job, When you are starting out or new to the workforce that would be a skill to sell when that’s the kind of job you are seeking.

  2. That is definitely a great skill to have. I think how you want to showcase it on your resume depends on what stage of you career you are at, and what kind of job you are looking for. Some jobs, such as transcribers, administrative assistants, court reporters and such, require typing speed and accuracy. Others, like project management, employee supervision, creative directors, etc., demand more "big picture" thinking and people skills. For example, my sister types about 70 wpm. When she was in graduate school for journalism, she listed it prominently on her resume and got side gigs typing and editing papers. When she became a reporter, it moved down substantially into the "added skills" section of her resume. Good luck!
