Why isn't my English Bulldog protective and aggressive?

I bought an English Bulldog as a guard dog but all he does is sleep all day and when he sees strangers outside the fence he picks up a toy and tries to play with them. I want him to bark at strangers to keep them away from my property. I tried feeding him raw meat but that has had no effect on his temperament. Why is he like this?

  1. Well, first things first, if you wanted a barking dog, a terrier might have been a better choice. But a point you've completely missed is that English Bulldogs have a sweet disposition. They are not guard dogs. They are great with children, playful, and they love and crave attention. They may look like Alec Baldwin, but they do not have his temper. They are sweet dogs.

You've made a mistake in choice of dog.

From the AKC - Kind but courageous, friendly but dignified, the Bulldog is a thick-set, low-slung, well-muscled bruiser whose “sourmug” face is the universal symbol of courage and tenacity. These docile, loyal companions adapt well to town or country.  https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/bulldog/

From Chewy - Don’t let that fierce-looking, jowly mug fool you—the English Bulldog is really a mellow mush-ball. Originating in 13th century Great Britain, these brave pups are now one of the most popular companion dogs in the U.S. No wonder: They’re loyal, friendly and easy-going, and they are equally at home in tiny apartments and sprawling suburban houses. Bottom line: These pups can make perfect pets. https://petcentral.chewy.com/behavior-breeds-english-bulldog-dog-breed/

From Hillspet - Personality: The English bulldog has a sweet, gentle disposition. Dependable and predictable, the bulldog is a wonderful family pet and loving to most children. People-oriented as a breed, they actively solicit human attention.https://www.hillspet.com/dog-care/dog-breeds/english-bulldog

  2. Clay,

I'd have to agree with Kathleen on this one. English bulldogs don't make great guard dogs. You could always augment by adding a German Shepherd and have two dogs? The shepherd is a great guard dog and very intimidating.

I recently read a very interesting Mini-English Bulldog breed guide from Your Dog Advisor that might also be helpful.

Also, take a look at a couple of guides from homeo animal on both nutrition and training your pet. Maybe you could get the bulldog to bark at the sound of the door? :)
