Email Follow-Up

Every once in a while, I’ll email a professor asking a mildly important question regarding class. If you don’t get a response to an email, how long should you wait before a follow up email? Does it change if it’s a colleague vs. a superior?

  1. A lot of this depends on the urgency of the question.  For a teacher/superior-at-work, if the question is time sensitive, then 24 hours or the first thing the next day. If you need the answer sooner than that, then you'll probably have to find another way -phone, text, or alternate source of information.

For colleagues/friends, when it isn't urgent, 3-5 days for a follow up isn't going to make anyone think you're being pushy, and you could probably follow up sooner!
