Looking for an author similar to W. S. Maugham

W. S. Maugham is a literary genius and I have almost read his entire collection (yes, even the plays and the essays). The way he can tell a story with such ease, and so wholly capture a character with just a few simple words never fails to baffle me. I'm looking for another author who has a similar style. I also really enjoy Tolstoy, Bronte and Austen, but would be open to something more modern.
