Best resources to learn writing?

I want to write novels for a living. I've written some when I was younger but I want to take it more seriously now. What's the best way to learn what I need to write my first novel?

  1. I don't write fiction, but there are many terrific books out there about writing. My personal recommendations for the best three books on writing are:

    • The Elements of Style, by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White -- This is an absolute bible for writers.
    • Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott -- This gem of a book helps you free your creativity and get over mental blocks.
    • The Weekend Novelist, by Robert J. Ray and Bret Norris -- This is a step-by-step program to plot out and write your first novel.

    Good luck and happy writing!
