Tips for going back to school as an adult

I’m thinking of taking some courses at a local community college next semester to start earning a degree. I’m really nervous about managing my time for school, work and family. Does anyone have any tips for time management or going back to school as an adult?

  1. Way to go on taking time to increase your education!

As someone who recently completed her Master's degree while raising three kids and working two jobs, I can certainly relate to feeling overwhelmed with how you will divide your time between multiple demands. My biggest piece of advice is to view your college courses as a job and not as an "extra-curricular" activity. This means looking ahead at each week and blocking out times in advance that will be dedicated schoolwork times. Treat these times as non-negotiable, just like you would if it was a paid job. Don't be afraid to let those you interact with on a regular basis (family members, significant others, and even close friends) know the times you have set aside for schoolwork, this way they know when making plans what they can expect you to be available for and what you may need to pass on in order to get your work completed.

Returning to school as an adult takes planning, patience, and a bit of grit but is certainly a worthwhile investment.
