What are some good romance novels for readers new to the genre?

I've never been the type to read romance. Hand me some classic novels, a fantasy series, or a high-octane thriller any day! I'd like to read from a wider variety of genres and romance seems hard to break into. There are so many bottom-shelf paperbacks with provocative covers that it's hard to tell what's a good book and what isn't. A lot of them are eye-rollingly cheesy or just way too graphic. Which authors write good quality romance novels? Where can I start?

Oh just go to Nora Roberts' section. She's got over 200 romance novels written, you won't go wrong. And they're not heavy breathing chest-heaving, though there will be one hefty scene in the books that does, but they're not goofy. And no, I'm not a romance reader at all, but a number of hers I picked up in the paranormal genre that did allow to see some of her romance writing.

I'm a mystery/drama gal myself, and I can recommend Roberts for that as well, but I can't read the hard-boiled mysteries as I once had so switched to cozy and paranormal mysteries - more a Murder She Wrote and Midsomer Murders kind of writing. I kind of have a soft spot for female writers of amateur gumshoe stories, have read dozens of them if you ever want a recommendation there.
