Is there a surefire way to get rid of cat smell?
The previous owners of my house used their home as a cat sanctuary for many years. According to the neighbors, they always had dozens of cats... and I believe it! I've owned this house for 3 years and had it professionally cleaned in the living spaces, basement, and air ducts. It still smells strongly of cat urine, especially when the weather is humid. What else can I do? I think it is in the walls or soaked into the hardwood.

While you may have had the house cleaned, if it was a general cleaning that doesn't get rid of cat or dog odor. You might need to have the place thoroughly cleaned again using an enzyme cleaner to break down the uric acid. That's a dead giveaway that the odor gets worse when it's humid, that means there's still urine present, and may be as deep as the subfloor.
What's suggested is to clean first with vinegar, then use an enzymatic cleaner to break down the urine. If you didn't replace the carpeting, which I really hope you did, and if they steam-cleaned the carpet, then they set the stain, maybe making it more permanent. But with that many cats inside, it's like that that urine went into the subfloors. At least you need another good cleaning, and use an enzymatic cleaner.
I personally used Nature's Miracle for my dog, it also has one for cats. And there are others, I suggest you do a google search and read reviews for some of the best cleaners. One other I saw was Rocco & Roxie Professional Odor Eliminator.
