Has a U.S. coin or paper currency ever featured a portrait of an African American person on its face (obverse) side?
With the front and center issues of racism in 2020 America, has this ever happened?

No African-American has been portrayed on American currency. Yet. There has been a plan to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, it was voted on back in 2015, in a plan to add a woman to the twenty-dollar bill. Three candidates were voted on, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was selected to replace Andrew Jackson's portrait on the currency.
The release of the Harriet Tubman twenty-dollar bill was scheduled to be in this year, 2020. Because of sentiments of the current Administration, and comments objecting to the change, the plans for release of the Harriet Tubman twenty-dollar bill has been pushed back to 2028 to avoid any chance that it might be cancelled. It is possible the bill may be released sooner, but also possible it may not be released. But to date, there has been no African-American on paper currency in the U.S.
There have been no real-person African-Americans on any U.S. coins. There was one coin issued however, to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the US Mint, an American Liberty Anniversary $100 Liberty Gold Coin was minted in 2017 in a limited edition with the image of an African-American woman. It was not a coin for circulation, but for collecting.
