Teaching a 2-year-old to fall asleep on her own?

A friend of mine is struggling with getting her 2YO to fall asleep on her own. She wakes them up 1-3 times a night. Their daughter coslept with them until a few months ago when their second baby was born. 

 

Night wakings have definitely increased since the baby was born. Right now, one of them has to lie down next to her until she falls asleep (which they say is sweet, but they need more sleep themselves). Any tips appreciated.
