To me, this boils down to a few questions:

Are you comfortable running Windows in a VM?

Do you need to do heavy duty graphic design / editing?

Are you already familiar with one over the other?

If 1 or 2 are "yes", I'd say go with a Mac,  If they are no, and you're not already familiar with a Mac, no reason to switch.  If you are already familiar with Mac, then no reason to change unless your school specifically requests PC.

I've used both, went back and forth between the two and now primarily use a Windows-based PC primarily because of available software, and the biggest reason, because of expense.

    So, arguments:

Windows pc's are far more affordable - PCs tend to last about 3-4 years before needing upgrades or a new computer. A Mac will last a bit longer than that.  Currently I'm updating computer equipment about every 3-4 years no matter what. So, the cost of a pc is more reasonable for me. I spent about $2000 last Mac I bought, and I bought a new pc just this past January for $1000. It's simple math to me.

There are advantages to using both, the Mac is easier to navigate, the PC is more intellectual.

And then there's one last argument - my new PC I can use as a tablet, it's a 2-in-1, and you can't do that with a Mac.

So, you need to weight the pros and cons of each, and bottom line is you need to determine what will best work for you, what capabilities you need, and what your budget requirements are. Nobody can really tell you what to get because our use in individual to us.

  3. You might also get a different answer if you posted under the Mac O/S sub-topic. It would be fun to see what types of back and forth you get on this one. I personally love Macs and will always be a user. I have plenty of Windows laptops and desktops.

But if you're looking for a clean experience where things just work and you don't have lots of distractions happening all around you from driver installs to software updates, Mac is the way to go.

  4. For school work, I'd always recommend a Windows PC.

They are still cheap, and most common and popular software has a available Windows version. Although it is very much possible to run Windows operating system on any Mac these days, it is kind of a hassle to set up and run unless the user is a very techie person--which I cannot assume for all school students.

  5. I agree with Chris Martin, but would add two extra questions you should ask yourself:

    (1) How much do you want to spend?  Macs cost at least half again as much as the equivalent PC, in general.

    (2) Do you want a computer just for browsing the Web and reading Email, or do you want to learn to USE it?  If you plan to become thoroughly familiar with computers and software, you might as well start with a system that doesn't try to keep you as ignorant as possible of how it works: get Linux and get yourself free!  You can always run VirtualBox and install Windows in a container.  Also, Linux is FREE.

Read up on the alternatives before you decide.  Research done before buying is always better than research done after it's too late.

  6. With the growing number of students bringing Macs to campus(over 50% of the Fall 2016 freshman class), it is likely that there are more students(and parents) debating whether or not to buy a PC or a Mac. The very short answer is that Lehigh fully supports both Windows and Mac platforms; and, as stated previously, it is always recommended that you purchase the computer that fits your wants/needs for personal use as long as the hardware specifications fit Lehigh's minimum requirements(which new computers do). In order to help you make your final purchase decision, LTS has compared the following major points between both platforms. Be aware that you may have other considerations specific to your wants/needs; however, the following major comparison points should give you a solid starting point.

    PC

This has been and continues to be a major concern for Windows users. While the latest versions of Windows are much more secure than previous versions and Microsoft continues to make great strides in terms of security and protection, the Windows platform is still the target of the majority of viruses, malware, and spyware on the Internet.

    Mac

Macs typically experience fewer virus/malware/spyware-related problems. Regardless of platform, no system is totally immune from threats and Lehigh still recommends that users take appropriate steps to protect their computer from virus/malware/spyware threats.

  7. What the advertising tells you is one thing, but the reality is that it is not. In fact when you make a comparison, use the same hardware, let's not compare a MacBook of 3000 euros with a laptop of 300.
