Make your bed- every single morning, make your bed.
Research demonstrates you sleep better in a bed that was made when you got into it- it appears to be part of the advice "Follow good sleep hygiene with a system- a set of specific steps, every time." Apparently, pulling the covers back and seeing smoothed sheets begins a process that automatically points your brain to the "Sleep now" position.
Now me, I make my bed every morning because my Mother would likely come back from the grave to lecture me on being an absolute slob for not making it- nearly as bad as not doing every single dirty dish each night and put them all away! Mom was a bit of a clean freak, but I thankfully took to heart some of her very last advice to me, which was, "If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't waste so much time cleaning".
Thanks, Mom.
But the bed and dishes parts stuck- I feel an interior cringe if I do not do those two chores.
However, making your bed isn't just about the science of sleep. It is also about one, small, perhaps only, sense of accomplishment, something that went right, every single day, even on the most horrible of days. In a speech given to the graduating class of The University of Texas at Austin, in 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven provided this exact piece of advice to those newly hatched adults:
"If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed."
And he then tells them why- how it helps you hold your spot in life, every day.
So, if you want to change the world AND sleep better, make your bed.
