What are the best ways to exhibit your skills?

Every person is talented in one way or the other. Some may be good at studies, some may be good in sports, some may be good in fine arts etc. There are several ways and platforms to exhibit the skills. Getting recognized for the talent and getting appreciation from others also boost up talent and is much more important. In this direction, what are the best ways to exhibit skills.

Hi Chayan, I was hoping you might clarify something about this question for me. You say "Getting recognized for the talent and getting appreciation from others also boost up talent and is much more important."

I'm not sure I agree with that. While being recognized and appreciated is fantastic, I don't think it is more important than having skills in the first place.  Perhaps you mean to say something like "If no one knows you have the talent, what use is that talent?" I definitely don't agree with that, because I believe the discipline that comes with learning/developing skills is applicable to so many areas of life.

That said if you are an artist/athlete/student and looking to be noticed and or appreciated for the hard work you've done, in order to advance in your career/team/
studies, then there are definitely better and worse ways to approach this.  One of the best things a younger person can do, in my experience, is to volunteer to mentor/coach a less experienced person in your field.  Not only will you learn things about your craft that you didn't know (there is no better path to mastering a skill than through teaching it to others) but leadership, taking care of others, and contributing to the good of the community are all things that senior leaders look for.  It can be hard work but is very rewarding.

  2. I ran into this situation back in 2012, where I have spent years in college and with my new job grinding knowledge so I can be better at my job. Unintentionally I started going to conferences to network with experts in my field, and then later I ended up becoming a public speaker in that industry. Once you're a public speaker, which is actually easier than it sounds to get into, you are looked at as an expert in your field and respected by the community in that industry. At that point you can start building a personal brand and people will be constantly reaching out to you for consultation/advice. So I've been at that point in my career.

Of course depending on what industry you're in, it could go different ways, so others may have different perspectives that could help as well.
