  1. For many decades I've been advising people to never think of employment as a "job" that you go looking for; as you have recognized, this may put you in a situation where you have to do something you hate for a long time just to feed yourself.  As "jobs" have become more and more scarce, this has become more and more true.

The career you want, and would be good at, and would be fulfilled by, is not "out there" waiting for you to discover it in an advertisement.  It is something you need to invent for yourself, even if it entails getting someone to pay you to do it.  Inventory your skills and loves, combine them into the "ideal job for you" and figure out who needs that done for them.  Maybe the answer is "everyone!" in which case you need to form your own company and "put it out there".  More often there is a company or a person who desperately needs you to do that job for them, but doesn't know it yet.  Go convince them.

This is the advice I always gave my university students. No one ever came back and told me it was bad advice.
