    Dear Jason,

Thank you for sharing your question. I was working on this issue for the Austrian government, since many employees had to work remotely and we were asking ourselves the same question.

There are many ideas, tools and techniques on how to make the virtual workspace more engaging, but I would need more information about the software and tools which are being used by the employees - how do they collaborate? Is it via MsTeams, Slack, Discord, G-Suite...? Do they have any virtual workshops? What do they need?

Based on the "analysis" of the status quo in an organisation and the tools in use, a suitable consulting can be provided.

But here are some general tips from my experience that make the the virtual workspace more engaging:

regular short synchronous 15-20 min. meetings (can be with or without video) where team members share with others what they were working on, what are the challenges and who could help and then next steps (can be done via slack, MSTeams, Google Meet...)

    • for interactive workshops, use the virtual whiteboards (Miro, Mural, or Lucidspark) - you can achieve even higher interaction with these whiteboards than in a common workshop setting on-site

    • offer online social activities (some employees maybe live alone and would appreciate such initiative), like gaming night, where participants can build groups and compete online

e-coffee chat - informal short meeting (usually 15-20 minutes) among employees to chat about personal and professional topics (can be between two employees, or even more)

mentorship program, where counselling on the career paths of the employees is offered, so that they feel heard and can point their efforts in the right direction (this is relevant for both online and offline)

These were just some quick tipps that might help employees get more engaged even if they work remotely.

    I hope I could help :)

    Best regards,

    Paulina Paulova
