How does Google know to update its search results for breaking news items?
I mean even when I just search "california", I get all the breaking news in that state. How do they do this?

Using AI and deep-learning methods, Google's search results are always observing and absorbing information from countless other sources to provide the best and most relevant information to you as the user.
Google digests news feeds from various organizations, so they can figure out important news items in near real-time.
