What cake can you give a 1 year old?

My son is turning a year old in a few days. Yay! I'd like to give him some kind of cake-like treat but I'm not sure what he can eat easily. He loves food and is very adventurous about eating, but not keen on being fed with utensils. He would much prefer to grab with his hands. If I give him a piece of cake I don't know if he will be able to pick it up at all. Surely he will get some of it off his fingers, though!

Looking for suggestions for a 1-year-old's preferred treat. Would he like lots of whip cream to play with? Would a cupcake be easier to grab? Is there any candy that isn't a choking hazard he could try?

For my son's first birthday I played the Star Wars theme music at full blast and gave him a whole (small) chocolate cake to do with as he pleased.  Then I let him have a sip of my beer.  My only regret is that I did not first spread a tarp under him.  (His clothes washed out easily.)

When he was three we lived in Tokyo for 6 months.  There he learned to love sushi.

He has since turned into a discriminating gourmand and accomplished chef.

The funny thing about birthdays for toddlers is that usually the celebration is for the adults and family, rather than the child. All the decorating and treats are more about what the adults find pleasing. So, first, nice idea. And I'd go for miniature cupcakes - the bite-size kind. Some bakeries may have them, and maybe special order, you could bake some yourself, there's lots of fun ideas online. And I've seen them in supermarket bakery sections. I think the mini cupcakes would be a great idea for a 1-year-old. There's little question that they could grab and hold it, and that would make a perfect treat for their birthday.

And you might want to look at cake pops too - they're cake lollipops, and if your child eats lollies, that could also be fun. And, an interesting idea is that some bakers on the website Etsy, do custom cake pops to order, and at a reasonable price, so you could have them shipped. https://www.etsy.com/search?q=cake%20pops
