Perfumed Disinfectants
Products like Odoban, Oust and Lysol Neutra Air contain disinfectants that are effective on surfaces such as alcohols, hydrogen peroxide, and other chemicals like Triethylene glycol to absorb moisture. To these are added perfumes that hang in the air and are designed to mask smells by overpowering them. The disinfectants themselves aren’t effective in the air and shouldn’t be breathed.
The Odor Deactivator
Febreeze is an entirely different product. The active ingredient is the carbohydrate beta-cyclodextrin, which is an 8-sugar ringed molecule. Water in the spray partly dissolves the offensive particles in the air which allows them to be trapped in the hole of the donut shaped cyclodextrin.
Now the odor particles can not bind to your olfactory receptors thus you can’t smell them. As the spray deactivates more and more of the offensive molecules, the concentration of them in the air drops. The product can be unscented or have a fragrance to leave a pleasant odor as the concentration drops.
This product does not stop the odor molecules from being produced, you have to find the source of the smell and eliminate it or the odor will continue to be released. It works best on trapped odors in fabrics like couch cushions and other things that can’t be easily washed, or in the air such as after the bathroom was used. I spray it into the kitchen trash bag before it remove it from the can, tie it up and bring it to the outside trash can.
Tag Team the Smell
You can use products cooperatively - Febreeze to knock down odors then use a cleaner or disinfectant to kill or remove whatever is causing the odor once you locate the source.
