Landscaping and gardening professionals often advise against planting fast-growing trees because they tend to be short-lived.

Nevertheless, it is nice to have fast shade. I have had good luck with maple trees. They have a nice spreading canopy, and they come in a variety of types. I would recommend against the Bradford pear, which grows quickly and is commonly planted. This species flowers nicely, but the trees tend to grow in a spire-like fashion -- meaning they don't have much canopy. They are also brittle and drop limbs once they reach a decent height.

I recommend a Google search for "fast growing trees" for a complete list.
