God, NO!  Twitter is a literary plague!  If you want to write short rants and aphorisms, do it somewhere that won't weaponize them.  Like http://jick.net/~jess/quips/  ;-)

  2. Is twitter a necessary career tool for writers/editors/journalists?

No, you don't have to have or use Twitter as a writer but, like any tool, it can be useful...if you use it correctly.

Twitter is a terrific place to follow peers, sources, connections and trends. I frequently use it to follow news and industry source...but then I follow up on those and confirm details for myself.

Twitter can be a great place to connect with peers, fans and industry to make professional connections...it can also be a terrific place to alienate people because you lashed out for no reason.

I love Twitter and have made many excellent connections there. But it's on me to police who and what I am involved with and saying.
