What is a double cleanse in skin care?

I’m new to the whole skin care trend and I’m trying to make my own routine but I don’t seem to catch up on all the terminologies like “double cleanse”

A "double cleanse" is basically what it sounds like; cleansing your skin twice. In the case of this particular skincare process, it usually refers to cleansing your skin twice with two different cleansers. And even more specifically, to using one oil-based cleanser and one water-based cleanser. The theory is that they each remove different things more effectively, yielding a cleaner clean. However, like most such concepts, it is rooted in marketing and should not be mistaken for an actual scientific concept, nor one that has real evidence behind it. If you want real, science-based skincare advice, it's best to consult a doctor who is board certified in dermatology, rather than relying on trends created by people who are trying to sell something.

As a person with a licensed Esthetician (Skincare Specialist) background, I definitely like the idea of double cleansing.  Is it required for achieving clear skin? No.  But however, it can definitely help.

Cleansing is vital for healthy skin.  Proper cleansing not ony cleans the face from the day's dirt and grime, but it also clears the skin of dry, flaky skin, dead skin cells, and excess oils clogging the pores.

Double cleansing in the morning isn't necessary as most of us spend  the night sleeping, and not encountering sweat, airborne bacteria and pollutants, as well as excess oils, after a long day. *If you work nights, you'll benefit double cleansing in the morning, and not in the evening like most.

A deeper clean is even more essential if you had a good, sweaty workout, or wear makeup.  When skin isn't properly cleansed, that could lead to not just acne and breakouts, but an older looking appearance due to dry, dull skin that prevents healthy, new skin cells to make their way through.

Clear pores and clean skin allow products to absorb better and penetrate deeper.  For those makeup lovers, a clear face allows for a smoother makeup application too!

If you're interested in double cleansing, the evening cleanse should include:

    1. Gently cleansing the skin with an oil based cleanser, until there isn't any residue left

    2. Then it's time for your regular gentle cleanser you use with water
