How is every single book a NYT best seller?

We have all seen the words "New York Times Bestseller" printed on every single book at the checkout lane of a drugstore. These are TERRIBLE books that NO ONE should want to read (but surely someone is reading them?) and they all proudly bear those words. How can every book published in the last fifty years be a New York Times bestseller? What are the criteria for this list? How are FIRST EDITIONS being printed bearing this? It's it impossible for a first printing to be a bestseller?

And most importantly, does anyone care?
