What is the right paint to use in my bathroom?

My bathroom is currently in a bad shape and I want to renovate it. I don’t know much about this and I need recommendations on the right paint to use. I read somewhere that water based semi-gloss will work is that true?

High quality semi-gloss or gloss finish paints with anti-mildew additives are the best paints for bathrooms. 100% acrylic binder paints (water based) are tougher and more expensive than standard latex (vinyl binder) ones. While designer name paints like Ralph Lauren are over priced  because of brand appeal, better paints from long established manufacturers are worth the cost. Glidden One Coat, numerous Benjamin Moore paints, Sherwin-Williams, Valspar, and Behr higher end products are good choices.

If sanding is required, wear a N95 mask and clean up thoroughly afterwards, as many kinds of paints contain silica. Clean the walls thoroughly in any case. Kilz Max is a good primer for bathrooms if you are going from a bold color to a  pastel, you are doing patching, or if the paint is quite old. If you currently have an existing mold or mildew problem, start with Zinsser Mold Killing Primer.

The problem with glossier paints is that they reveal the imperfections of your walls. If you are patching, filling and possibly skim coating to fix them or if your walls are  already in good shape then don't worry about it. However if you are looking to paint without a lot of fiddling around or you absolutely hate glossy finishes, then Kikz Tribute Eggshell is a low VOC 100% acrylic paint plus primer solution. It is not cheap, but is definitely worth the price.
