Is learning Esperanto beneficial?
An acquaintance of mine speaks fluent Esperanto. I can't help but wonder why! She taught herself, knows nobody else who speaks it, and Esperanto isn't the official language of any country, so it doesn't open any travel doors. I mean, learning a language is fun, don't get me wrong, but is there a reason to pursue Esperanto as opposed to a language that actually has native speakers? Does fluency in Esperanto make it easier to learn other languages, sort of as a midway point in the language learning process?
