How can one key open multiple locks?
My suite-style apartment has one lock on the front door and individual locks on each bedroom. However, each roommate only has one key that opens both doors. How does this work, having two keys that can open some of the same locks, but also individual different locks? Is it a feature of the lock or the key?

One key that can open more than one lock would be considered a master key. And they are generally keys with pins Those keys would be made with the specific design and cut on the key to allow the pins to drop down into the lines on the key, and when they fit, that opens the lock. Several of the pins and cuts on the key would match for the front door, and the additional pins would be set for each individual door - something a locksmith would have to do.
