If I am going to grow my own hay, what is the best mix for my horse's digestive health?

After years of purchasing square and round bales of hay for my horses, I am planning to convert a few acres of field space into hay for personal baling and potentially local sales. I have the necessary equipment but am struggling with exactly what to plant to create the best forage mix for working horses. I know that some of my options will depend on my region which is the midwest, growing zone 5a/5b. Am I best to plant timothy grasses? Alfalfa? A blend? I want to grow hay that will promote digestive health for my horses as well as be an adequate source of energy. Thank you for your help!
