How do you kill creeping charlie that's taken over the lawn?

My lawn is in bad shape. I take some of the blame, but it wasn't well cared for even before I moved in, either. It's mostly weeds. The vast majority of the weed situation is creeping charlie, and that stuff seems practically impossible to kill! Most advice I've seen is to hand-pick it, but that'd turn my lawn into a dirt lot. Not to mention it would take forever! So my options now are either to ignore it and be grateful that creeping charlie stays low (not going to do that, since it's getting into the flowerbeds, too) or kill it somehow. What can I do to get rid of the weeds without killing the grass? I am in the northern USA.
