Having Just planned a wedding, (ok, ok, my wife is really the one who planned it) I would highly recommend taking the following steps:

    1. Pick a season.
      • Figure out if you want a fall, summer, spring wedding. If you don't care, this will actually make life a bit easier. Knowing the season you want will help you narrow down venues. Winter wedding? Probably has to be indoors.
    2. Find a Venue
      • This is the most important decision you will make. It can impact the guest list, the vendors, the theme, and many other factors. When you find a venue, or a few, that you like, it will help you pick a date. A bonus to doing this step first is that most venues will have a recommended vendors list. You will also have an idea of the maximum number of guests it will hold
    3. Get a ballpark idea of how many guests you will have
      • Before you talk to vendors, at least have a range of guests you will likely have. For most this can be something like, 100-150, or 50-100. This will help the vendors explain what they can provide, and give a more accurate quote.

Once you have completed these steps, getting your vendors, accomodation, and other logistics becomes much easier. As a final tip, don't stress too much! All of these little details will be a fond (or not so fond) memory once you are married. Enjoy it as much as you can and remember to communicate with your spouse!

  2. Pick a good spouse!  Someone you love and who loves you, someone you can argue with vehemently without actually getting angry, someone whom you respect and whose respect you are willing to earn, someone who teaches you things you never suspected and learns from you as well, someone you trust with your life and who trusts you right back.  That's a pretty good start; after that, your relationship should survive even the ordeal of a wedding!
