Should I watch Hamilton?

Hamilton was so hyped on Broadway. For awhile I felt like I couldn't go a day without hearing about the show, and that kind of turned me off to wanting to see it. Now that it's streaming, should I give in? Is it really that great? I'm not a history buff.

My wife and I were actually lucky enough to see Hamilton in person when Lin Miranda was still the leads with the original cast. It's an amazing experience. It takes you about 15-20 minutes to get into the cadence and get a feel for how they communicate between rapping, singing, and dancing.

But it's such a unique play, a great script, and the streaming version from Disney is with the original cast. We've watched it also and really loved it again, just as much.

Special note that King George's performances in it are absolutely hilarious...one of my favorite parts.

  2. Yeah, the hype is definitely a thing that can turn people off.  I haven't seen Titanic, I expect its a fine film but I can't be bothered.  :)

Hamilton is good for a bunch of reasons, and history is only barely one of them.  I grew up on School House Rock, and the music is the thing about those, right?  Good tunes, clever rhymes, American Mythology or Math or Grammar - all better together.

Hamilton is like that.  I love seeing the heros and legends of US History claimed by some of the non-white americans who haven't been represented in the same way, but that's totally a bonus.  The music, lyrics, and story of one of the lesser-known founding fathers make for compelling viewing.

tl;dr, yes, at least watch the first 15 minutes.  I had an old musical theater director friend who hated it (he thought everything after Oklahoma was pretty much trash), so its definitely not everyone's Boston Tea Party!

  3. I say "me to" in response to the two Sages so far but want to add one more thought.  My expectations going in were not that great because the prevailing  musical style in the show is not my favorite.  But I was frankly blown away by how well that style was used to tell this story.  Also, as a fan of dance as well as technical aspects of shows, I would also say that the choreography and costuming choices alone would be worth the ticket to Hamilton.  Truly innvotive and ground-breaking.
