Beds for three year old

I recently bought a loft style bed for my 3 year old with a slide. It is less than 4 ft high. However, some people have expressed concern, that this may not be safe.

Any thoughts

There is a chance of injury from any fall, even from the height of a regular bed or chair. According to Cincinnati Children's hospital, in a 2000 study of 238 children who fell from the top bunk of bunkbeds, 3.2% suffered cranial fractures. Very few deaths or major injuries, but it's important to take as many safety measures as you can. Does the room have a thick rug or a hard floor? Does the bed have a sturdy rail all the way around?  There are little gate attachments you can put across the loft's slide/ladder to prevent accidents -- might be worth looking into.

You know your child. If you've made the bed as safe as possible and you're confident that they cannot fall, then go for it. I'm sure a loft bed opens up tons of floorspace.

As a mom of a 3 year old, I admit that even a 4-foot loft bed would make me nervous. Mine falls out of his regular twin bed fairly often, but I'd be most concerned about kids horsing around up there! I can just imagine him practicing his long jumps, and considering the constant toys littering the floor, it sounds like a recipe for forehead stitches.
