Tesla Solar Roof Panels vs Others?

I've been considering solar panels for a long time, but the ROI just hasn't seemed to be there.  I don't live in an especially sunny part of the world and our electrical grid is very reliable, so the math and risk mitigation just hasn't added up.  I wondered if that had changed recently?  I know Tesla has made some investments in battery technology that have improved storage capacity - have they, or anyone else, brought something to market that really makes sense without tax subsidies?
