What is "Bumpass Hell" in Lassen Volcanic National Park?
I've heard the name but I don't know what it is. Should I go there if I visit Lassen?

"Early pioneer Kendall Vanhook Bumpass was the unfortunate explorer who stumbled—literally—upon these hydrothermal features in the 1860s: the discovery included stepping into a boiling pool and burning his leg. "

Elsewhere, you can find a question-and-answer on just why someone might be named Bumpass, and it turns out to be a bastardization of the French words, "Bon pass". Harmless enough, I suppose.
But the Hell is apt in this area of hot springs, both the heat and stench, and yes, if you are going to Lassen, why not take the trail through Bumpass Hell?
