Should I worry about a flickering light?

I have a very old house with almost a century's worth of sketchy wiring. Yes I know I should get the whole thing re-wired, but there's a reason it hasn't been done in the past hundred years. I've noticed one of my light fixtures sometimes flickers. I'll turn the switch on and off a few times, and then the flickering stops. Is this going to be an expensive problem?

  1. What kind of light fixture?  If it's a fluorescent bulb, especially the long skinny kind, then you probably need a new "ballast".  If it's an incandescent bulb, it may be about to burn out, at which point you should replace it with a new LED light and save both energy and maintenance burden.  If it's already an LED light, I don't know what to advise.  Flickering due to intermittent shorting of the wiring should lead in short order to a house fire.

Say, aren't you the same person who asked whether one could be arrested for burning down one's own house? BUSTED!
